Temporary Staff
For many different reasons organisations often have to employ temporary workers. Some employers will constantly have temporary workers on their books and in other cases an employer will require temporary workers for one off occasions. The reason for employing temporary workers is usually linked to the type of organisation. For example some companies will require temporary workers for a fixed amount of time in order to provide assistance with certain projects. In other cases organisations will constantly use the services of temporary workers and there will not be an allocated time as to when their contracts will expire. Different organisations have different policies in place in regards to the employment of temporary workers.
Those employers that employ temporary workers for an unstated amount of time must consider that after twelve weeks of broken employment a temporary employee legally becomes entitled to the same privileges of a regular employee. For example a regular employee will be entitled to holidays, holiday pay and sick pay but a temporary worker is usually not entitled to such benefits. For organisations that employ temporary workers on very short term contracts this is not an issue. Long term temporary employees will usually be recruited again and again by an organisation; this way the organisation is guaranteed of securing the services of somebody that is aware of how the company operates.
The majority of companies will employ temporary workers in order to assist with new large orders or a backlog of work. Temporary employees are most common in settings where the work is of low skill, for example many warehouses that have monotonous jobs employ temporary staff. Such employees are perfect for companies that have fluctuations in the business demands. Temporary workers are usually used by employers in order to reduce expenditure and also to ensure that the spending relating to employee wages is kept to a minimum.
This type of worker is not only employed within the low skill sector, many highly technical companies also employ temporary workers. In most cases a worker will be hired because their skills are only required for a specified amount of time. Some workers who start out on a temporary contract will then be offered a full time permanent contract. Due to the recession and the clamp down on business expenditure many businesses are now employing temporary workers. Some organisations have placed a ban on recruitment and therefore temporary workers are perfect for such situations.
